Dad's Dictionary: STOINK

Stoink = To poke unexpectedly.

This term actually came into being when I was 2 years old. In those days my Dad was a television and radio repairman. He owned a shop in Goltry, I think, or maybe it was Weatherford. Anyway, one day he was working on a television - this was back in the days of tubes and capacitors and huge consoles and so forth - and he was up to his shoulders in the back of the set. He was being extra careful because he had to have the set plugged in for some reason and didn't want to get shocked. Unbeknownst to him, I (remember, I'm only 2!) retrieved a screwdriver from his tool box, came up behind him and poked him sharply in the butt, yelling out, "Stoink!"

I'm not sure how long it took to untangle Dad from the back of that television set, but from that moment on, stoink was a permanent word in Kear vocabulary.
