Dad's Dictionary: CUT A CHOGEY

Cut A Chogey = "To leave." This phrase was often used to signal that it was time to leave. Used in a sentence it would go something like: "It's getting late, we'd better cut a chogey" or "If you want to get home in time to watch your show, then it's time to cut a chogey." I have no idea what a "chogey" actually is or why anybody would need to cut one in order to leave.

I googled Chogey and wasn't too excited with what I found. Looked something like gay porn. I dunno, I didn't go very far. I just saw gay stuff and left.

I'm pretty sure that the original meaning of "chogey" back in the hills of Tennessee didn't have anything to do with gay porn. At least I hope it didn't.

My Dad was in the Air Force in the Korean War, and picked up the phrase "chogey off" there, but didn't remember what it meant. Mom picked it up in turn and frequently told us kids to "chogey off to bed."

"Cut a chogey" as I know it is a trick you do in an inboard ski boat, like a bootlegger u-turn in a car. They have the engine in the middle and steer with a rudder. When you're at cruising speed throw the transmission into reverse and as the prop grabs the water the bow of the boat dives down (sometimes under water). The rudder will come out of the water, but if you crank the wheel just before this happens you will spin around within the length of the boat and end up facing the opposite direction. As you might imagine it's kind of violent and there are a lot of ways to break things and hurt or even throw out passengers.
