I discovered one of the great Southern traditions when I was about 10 years old. Peanuts in your Coke! I discovered this Southern tradition in the great American Southwest, particularly on a highway in New Mexico. I don't remember where we were going, but me, my dad, my cousin Teddy and my uncle Ted were on a road trip to somewhere in rural New Mexico when we stopped at one of those ubiquitous service stations along the highway. We each got an ice-cold Coca-cola in a glass bottle and either a candy bar or a bag of roasted salted peanuts. As soon as we were back on the road my uncle Ted opened his bag of peanuts and after taking a couple of swigs from his Coke, poured the nuts into the bottle. I asked him if he just poured his peanuts into his Coke and he said yes and that I should give it a try. I did and I've been hooked ever since. When you pour your peanuts into your Coke you get a wonderfully salty-sweet treat with a crunch in every swig! The trick is to get your peanut intake calibrated so that they last until the end of the Coke.
By the way, don't try this with a can. It just doesn't work right. You can use a plastic bottle or, best of all, a glass bottle. Yummo!

I haven't done that in YEARS. The first time I remember it was at Pa's station. I'll have to do this again. Do you use Diet Coke?
My memory is of me and my dad at the sale barn doing the same thing. I never could get the hang of it cause I keep swallowing the peanuts when I drank. But I did love going with my dad to the sale barn.
Cindy, you can use Diet Coke. It's actually a pretty good snack for the low carb dieter because peanuts aren't incredibly high in carbs. They probably have a lot of fat, though, so the low fat dieter may be in trouble even with Diet Coke.
TJ, in addition to the Peanuts and Coke, I'll bet you have a pretty clear memory of the smell of hay and cow manure at the sale barn, too!
I have that memorie, but it is with my grandma. In fact, Davy and I had this very conversation just last week. Strange, but not in an x-file sort of way.
