'Cause We Want To

My 7-year-old grandson Ashton and I were walking across the parking lot at the Walmart in Grove, Oklahoma, today when he said, "Papa, I'm glad I'm a big boy now."

"You are?" I asked. "How come?"

"Because now that I'm big, I don't have to have somebody hold my hand while I'm walking up to the Walmart."

"Well, you are a big boy," I said, "and you really don't need anyone to hold your hand while you're walking to the Walmart."

I paused, then went on. "But sometimes Papa needs someone to hold his hand when he's walking up to the Walmart; someone who knows the way."

Not two steps passed before his hand found its way into mine without a word.

We walked quietly together toward the store. Then Ashton, glancing down at our two hands, said, "Papa, we're big boys. We don't do this because we have to. We do it 'cause we want to."

Yes we do.
