This is a picture of my Great-grandmother, Mabel Lanham, surrounded by a few of her great- and great-great-grandchildren. It was taken in Wichita, Kansas in 1979. When I was growing up I called her "Grandma-Grandma" to distinguish her from my other grandmothers and great-grandmothers. She was my Grandma LeCrone's mother and spent her early life as a librarian and a school teacher.
This picture always reminds me of the time when Grandma LeCrone was on her deathbed. She was very close to going on home to Jesus, when she suddenly became alert and looked around the room. My Mom and my aunt Linda were there with her. They asked, "What is it, Mom?"
"Can't you see them?" She asked. "There are angels all around. And there's Mama..." Grandma's voice trailed off and she looked a little perplexed.
"What do you see?"
"Mama's got babies in her lap. She has children all around her."
My Mom lost several babies. My brother Davy lost four. My son Mikey, the baby in Grandma-Grandma's lap in the picture above, lost twins. I know where they are. And they couldn't be in better hands. Grandma-Grandma is taking care of them until we all get home.
