Dad & Murt

Yes. "My Dad often regaled us with his tales of the pets from his childhood. The perennial favorite was the story of Murt, the dog who ran sideways when chasing cats, who smiled when you touched the old scar on his side, who was kicked when Dad got in trouble, and who spent many an unwilling hour in the cow tank." (From my article last year about family dogs).

Murt was actually short for "Murdock," a villain in one of the Saturday morning serials that Dad and Don watched at the movies in Clayton every week when they got to go to town.

I'm pretty sure that Dad was trying to make Murt smile for the camera in the picture. Murt didn't seem to want to smile.
